The Mobile County Tobacco Tax Department handles the enforcement and collection of tobacco tax for Mobile County Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products as well as the tobacco tax for the City of Mobile Cigarette tax. Our Department also inventories and sells the tax stamps that are to be applied to the cigarettes for Mobile County and the City of Mobile.

Mobile County and the City of Mobile began assessing and collection tobacco tax on cigarettes in 1949 and collection of tax on Other Tobacco Products (OTP) began in 2003. All taxes collected by Mobile County, for the benefit of the City of Mobile are forwarded to the City monthly for their handling.  

Mobile County collects .15 for each pack of cigarettes for the City of Mobile and .20 for Mobile County

Mobile County collects .21 for each Cigar stick, .20 for Little Cigars packaged like cigarettes, .34 for Papers, includes but not limited to cones, rolling, tubes or wraps, .23 for loose Tobacco, includes but not limited to chewing, hookah, smoking or snuff

 

Tax is divided as follows:

  • Alta Point
  • Mobile County Economic Development Fund
  • Mobile County Mental Health
  • Mobile County School System
  • University of South Alabama Cancer Center
