Boats, Leadership & Parks, All Building Better Youth

Posted on: Mar 25th, 2018 | News and Announcements

Mobile County Parks will soon be adding five new, beautifully crafted and painted Jon boats to its fleet, thanks to the Boat Building Leadership Program of 100 Black Men of Greater Mobile. A special boat presentation will be made to Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood at 12:30 p.m., on Friday, March 23, at Booker T. Washington Middle School. After several months of working on these boats, program participants (who are middle school students) will finally see the fruits of their labor, while giving back to the community. According to the ?100?, the Boat Building Leadership Program is designed to bring relevance to math, to encourage teamwork, and to improve higher-order thinking skills as students work together with a master boat builder to construct a boat; and later, get the opportunity to ride in what they created. Once completed, the boats will be docked at Chickasabogue Park (located at 760 Aldock Road in Eight Mile) and River Delta Marina & Campground (located at 2350 Dead Lake Marina Road in Creola). The public will be able to rent the boats for $20 a day during the hours of 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and use them to discover the scenic beauty of Chickasaw Creek or explore the Mobile-Tensaw delta. Boats will be available first come, first served. ?The time and craftsmanship put into these boats is astonishing,? said Commissioner Ludgood. ?I?m proud of what these young people were able to accomplish. We are fortunate to have a mentoring program like the 100 that builds future leaders.?
