County Animal Control Shelter Called Best in State

Posted on: Feb 3rd, 2010 | News and Announcements

A state veterinary inspector called the Mobile County Animal Shelter the best animal control facility in the state following a surprise inspection last week. ?If the general public is not aware of the Mobile County animal facility, that?s a crime,? said Dr. David Hayes, a veterinarian and inspector for the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. ?It?s the finest facility I?ve seen in the state by far.? The effusive praise is partly written in longhand on the evaluation sheet provided by the inspector. The facility is inspected at least once a year. In an interview, Hayes said the facility earned high praise for a number of factors: · A facility clean and well-lit with temperature controls that assured adequate warmth for the animals; · The overall humane practices employed by shelter workers; · Animals that were uniformly well-fed and watered; · Well-qualified personnel; · Appropriate equipment. ?It?s the quality of the people, the quality of the facility and the quality of the practices,? he added. ?Residents of that county need to be proud of government that makes that kind of facility possible.? The Mobile County Animal Shelter moved from Prichard to a new building at 7665 Howells Ferry Road a year ago in April. The new shelter greatly expands the space for abandoned animals. The Mobile County Commission is required by the state of Alabama to be the animal control agency for Mobile County. That means the county is required to pick up all animals and accept all animals that are abandoned within the unincorporated area of the county and in a few municipalities. The county encourages citizens to adopt animals needing a home by visiting the shelter. The animals also may be viewed on the Internet at www.mobilecountyanimals.com. ###
