County Cleanup Gets Record Turnout

Posted on: Mar 10th, 2016 | News and Announcements

Mountains of junk turned Saturday?s Mobile County Clean Sweep effort into the biggest one ever with 670 loads of the stuff dumped by south county residents to be picked up and removed for free by the county to local landfills. For six hours, vehicles moved down Half Mile Road where county crews and community workers made quick work of unloading the junk from their vehicles and sending them on their way. ?The residents said they were very glad for the chance to purge their unwanted items,? said Mobile County Commission President Jerry Carl, who represents the Irvington-Grand Bay neighborhoods. ?They were amazed that so much trash came out of their community.? Items accepted included furniture, clothing, scrap metal, appliances, household items and yard debris. County crews now will start the two-week long task of separating the scrap metal for recycling and then carrying off the mess by knuckle boom trucks to the H&S Landfill on Howells Ferry Road and to Dirt Inc., at Cottage Hill and Leroy Stevens Roads. The service is available to any community of residents in Mobile County interested in participating. ?I encourage residents to take advantage of the service offered by the county by arranging Clean Sweeps in their neighborhoods,? said Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood. Citizens may schedule a Clean Sweep in their neighborhood by calling Mobile County Environmental Enforcement at 574-STOP (7867). ?The county of Mobile is making every effort to keep our neighborhoods clean and healthy through recycling, hazardous waste disposal events and these neighborhood clean-ups,? said Mobile County Commissioner Connie Hudson. The next Clean Sweep is scheduled for April 2 at the county dirt pit on Hubert Pierce Road
