County Commissioners Approve $31 Million Road Program

Posted on: Sep 13th, 2010 | News and Announcements

The Mobile County Commission Monday approved a $31 million Pay-As-You-Go road improvement program that will upgrade roadways in every Mobile County municipality and the unincorporated areas. The program will go to a vote of county registered voters at the November 2 general election. The Mobile County Pay-As-You-Go Program features a method of financing road improvements that allows the county to pay for road and bridge improvements with no new taxes and no borrowed money. Instead, the improvements are financed through funds collected in advance of each road program. The 2010 proposal is the 13th Pay-As-You-Go program since the county inaugurated the program in 1977. All previous 12 programs have been approved by voters. ?This program is the result of many months of hard work by our engineering staff,? said Mobile County Commission president Merceria Ludgood. ?Working in collaboration with our cities, we have tried to balance the needs with our resources.? Commissioner Mike Dean said the program is self-sustaining even in a tough economy. ?As you can see throughout the county, this Pay-As-You-Go program has helped us sustain jobs in a down economy and has provided a substantial road-building program for this community.? The 2010 program includes 40 projects, 95 miles of road resurfacing, the paving of 12 miles of dirt roads, and improvements to five intersections. Design work will begin with the approval of voters. The projects are expected to be accomplished in the next three years. Commissioner Connie Hudson encouraged citizens to vote in the upcoming election. ?We have put together an infrastructure program that provides essential improvements to our roadways and is very important to our community?s future,? she said. The projects will be available for viewing on the county website at www.mobilecountyal.gov. ###
