County Residents Get Say on Park, Recreation Plans

Posted on: Oct 21st, 2009 | Announcements

Mobile County residents will get three chances next week to help decide what their parks, playgrounds and recreational opportunities will look like for the next 10 years. The County Commission has scheduled three public input sessions the week of October 26 in the three commission districts of Mobile. Each session will start at 6:30 p.m. · District 1 - Monday, October 26, at the Chickasaw JC Davis Auditorium, 300 Thompson Blvd; · District 3 - Tuesday, October 27, at the Tillman?s Corner Community Center, 5055 Carol Plantation Road; · District 2 - Thursday, October 29, at the Semmes Library, 9150 Moffett Road. The Mobile County Commission has contracted with CSA Group Inc., landscape architects and site planners, to incorporate the input of citizens, along with an analysis of existing assets, for a 10-year Park and Recreation Plan for Mobile County. The commissioners will ultimately decide what the priorities of the county will be and how a capital building plan can best meet the needs of the community for the next decade. The question to the public, said CSA architect James Crowe, is: ?If we build additional park and recreational facilities over the next 10 years, what would you want to see?? Everything is on the table, including access to more waterways, sports fields, boat docks, canoe trails, playgrounds, and such. At the public hearings, CSA will provide a map of existing park and recreational assets within the county, including those within the county?s municipalities. Those assets will include publicly-owned facilities as well as natural resources used for recreational purposes. In analyzing the needs of the community, the firm will incorporate national recreation standards related to population size to help determine where the deficits exist. If anyone is unable to attend the meetings, they may submit opinions in writing within two weeks following the meeting to: Mobile County Commission, c/o Tyler Martin, 205 Government St., 6th Floor South, Mobile, 36644-1600. ###
