Fighting Dogs Impounded by Mobile County

Mobile County animal control officers impounded 27 dogs Tuesday afternoon during an investigation into dog fighting, overcrowding the public shelter on Howells Ferry Road and putting the adoptable dogs in jeopardy of being euthanized. The fighting dogs will require added space since they must be held for up to 20 days, and possibly longer, because they must be separated from each other and all other dogs. Meantime, the shelter, by law, must continue to pick up strays and house them for a minimum of seven days. The space constraints put the 30 dogs in the adoptable kennels at risk for being euthanized to provide the necessary room. The fighting dogs, all pit bulls and pit bull mixes, came into county custody after county animal officers were called to 5641 Marshall Road on a complaint of an injured animal. Officers discovered the dogs, along with dog fighting equipment and what appeared to be a dog fighting pit. One of the dogs died at the scene and two others were found seriously injured. Officers were continuing to document the case late Tuesday afternoon and will present the evidence to the District Attorney?s Office Wednesday for possible charges. Dog fighting is a felony in Alabama. The Mobile County Animal Shelter is located at 7665 Howells Ferry Road. Some of the adoptable animals may be viewed at www.mobilecountyanimals.com. ###
