MOBILE COUNTY EMA • TROPICAL STORM FRANCINE  •  ALERT #1

Mobile County is under a Tropical Storm Warning, Storm Surge Watch and a Flood Watch as issued by the National Weather Service.

Mobile County is forecasted to experience mid-level tropical storm-force winds (approx. 40 mph), heavy rain, storm surge of approx. 2 to 4 feet beginning Wednesday evening through Thursday morning.  This storm will generate life-threatening rip currents and has the potential for inland flooding due to rainfall.

The storm is expected to make landfall to the west. Mobile County residents are encouraged to:

  • Be Informed: Tune in to official channels of communication. Public notices will be communicated through local media, official EMA, County, and local municipalities' social media, www.mcema.net, and the MCEMA app, which is available at the Apple Store or Google Play. Get your weather information from reliable sources like the National Hurricane Center, National Weather Service and local TV meteorologists.
  • Be Prepared: Know your risk and evacuation zone. Have a plan. Build a kit of necessary supplies and medicine. Gather important documents like your insurance policy. Prepare your home. Charge your devices and be tech ready. Check on elderly or medically vulnerable friends and neighbors.

At this time, Mobile County Emergency Management Agency is not planning to open a shelter for the storm.

The City of Mobile prepared a listing of places that will accept those who are unhoused, which has been posted to its official social media channels (e.g. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/K3VvTd7P5TquFK3E/) and shared by EMA and its partners.

Saraland Safe House will be opening as a “Safer Place.”   Call the Saraland Police Department’s non-emergency number for more information at 251-675-5331.

A Safer Place is not a typical, staffed shelter. It is a place can go to during severe weather that is safer than the outdoors, a mobile home, or similar.

  • Pets are not allowed except for service animals.
  • Those seeking shelter at a Safer Place should know:
    • Safer Places meet structural requirements, but these facilities are generously provided by organizations in local communities to assist their neighbors, and absolute safety is not guaranteed.
    • To bring any food, blankets, toiletries, medications, etc. that may be needed during the immediate threat and duration of the weather event.

If there are any changes, an update regarding Tropical Storm Francine will be issued
