Good news for drivers in Mobile County! 400 traffic signals reprogrammed for better traffic flow

Posted on: Feb 5th, 2025 | AnnouncementsPress ReleasesFeatured News

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), Mobile County Commission, and the City of Mobile have completed a major traffic signal update to improve flow and reduce congestion.

The changes simplify signal operations and prioritize real-time monitoring. This project was implemented in phases since the fall of 2024 by skilled engineers from all three entities working together.

"This is an exciting advancement for traffic flow in the Mobile metro area," said Mobile County Commission President Merceria Ludgood. "This will have many positive impacts, but what I believe is most important is this project's impact on public safety," she added.

Mobile County's lead traffic engineer Brad Wittmann said: "I'm proud of the collaboration between Mobile County Commission's Engineering Department, City of Mobile Engineering, and ALDOT Engineering. Whether on County, City, or State roads within the geographic area of the county, approximately 400 traffic signals have been reprogrammed so that drivers can get to their destinations more efficiently."

Key Improvements:

  • Retimed Signals: major thoroughfares now have smoother traffic flow and fewer delays.
  • Remote Adjustments: Engineers can now tweak signal timing in real time to respond to traffic conditions.
  • Live Monitoring: Cameras at key intersections allow engineers to track performance (no recordings are stored).
  • Special Event Timing: Custom signal plans manage traffic for events like Mardi Gras or football games.
  • Ongoing Enhancements: Annual funding will continue improving signals and fixing road sensors.

The $11 million traffic signal initiative, which included federal funds and contributions from the City of Mobile and Mobile County, is now in its next phase, with annual funding allotments to address signal concerns and a focus on upgrading road sensors to further improve traffic. The collaborative effort aims to make traffic signals in the Mobile area safer and more efficient for everyone.

Notice a problem? Use the “Report a Concern” form on ALDOT’s website, or leave a voicemail at (251) 470-8207. Provide the time, location, and direction of the issue to help engineers resolve it quickly.

Examples of Traffic Signals Retimed for Smoother Commutes in the Mobile Metro area:

Airport Boulevard from University Boulevard to Cody Road: During peak hours, drivers will notice fewer stops and shorter travel times. Off-peak and overnight travel will also be quicker, with reduced delays making trips more predictable.

Dauphin Street from Rimes Road to Sage Avenue: These changes mean fewer delays and easier transitions from side streets onto the main road, especially around the I-65 ramps.
