MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. – The intersections of Howells Ferry Road at Firetower Road and Scenic Hills Drive at Howells Ferry Road in west Mobile County will be closed to all traffic beginning Monday, Jan. 20, 2025 for the construction of a roundabout.

This closure is expected to last approximately eight weeks; however, all construction projects are weather-dependent.

Message boards have notified drivers of this pending closure since the first week of January. Detour signs will be in place before the closure. The main detour route for Howells Ferry Road is west on Howells Ferry Road, north on Snow Road North, east on Moffett Road, and south on Schillinger Road North. The detour route for Firetower Road is north to Moffett Road. The detour route for Scenic Hills Drive is west to Snow Road North.

Motorists are asked to allow extra travel time during this closure.

This temporary closure is in Mobile County Commission District 2.

This construction project is funded through Rebuild Alabama and the 2018 Pay-As-You-Go Transportation Improvement Program. Pay-As-You-Go is a method of financing road and bridge improvements with no new taxes or debt. Funds are collected in advance of each road program. Beginning in 1977, Mobile County’s Pay-As-You-Go has committed more than $1 billion to local road improvements. It has been approved by voters each of the 20 times it has appeared on a ballot.
