Statement from District 2 Commissioner Connie Hudson regarding the closure of Big Creek Lake

“As the County Commissioner representing the geographic area that includes the Big Creek Lake reservoir, I fully support any and all efforts to resolve issues that pose risks to the municipal drinking water supply and allow the reopening of the Lake to the public for recreational use. My office has been in contact with the Take Back Big Creek Lake from MAWSS citizens group to hear concerns, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Commissioner, Chris Blankenship, to request information and assistance, as well as with State Representative Shane Stringer to offer support and advocate for legislative efforts to address the matter.
Big Creek Lake, which is owned and controlled by the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System, has certainly been a source of recreational enjoyment for citizens for generations, and I am committed to advocating for solutions through working with stakeholders and state officials to explore a resolution that can balance environmental protection with recreational access at the Lake.
While I understand the deep frustration this has caused in our community, let me reiterate that MAWSS operates independently of the Mobile County Commission. Big Creek Lake, by state statute, is owned and operated by the MAWSS seven-member Board of Directors, who are each appointed by members of the Mobile City Council. The Mobile County Commission, by law, does not have any appointments to the Board. My office was apprised by MAWSS Director, Bud McCrory, of their intent to close the Lake the same day that the MAWSS Board voted for closure.
I would encourage all parties to work together collaboratively going forward as community input and cooperation are vital in resolving this issue. My office remains available to support all efforts that align with our shared interests in preserving both the safety of our drinking water supply, while also continuing to allow public enjoyment of the Lake’s recreational resources.”
