Mobile County Builds New Road Near TK

A brand new road is being cut from I-43 to Celeste Road in north Mobile County to address increasing traffic around the new $5 billion ThyssenKrupp steel mill. ?We expect this roadway to be heavily travelled,? said Commissioner Merceria Ludgood. We need to make sure we pave the way for new growth and development, particularly as other businesses follow TK into the area.? The new road, expected to be completed in June, will connect Highway 43 to Celeste Road by linking the existing Henry Davis Road to Weaver Road. The new connector will make it possible to drive to TK without going as far north as West Coy Smith Highway or all the way south to Salco Road. ?It?s a beautiful roadway that cuts through wooded areas in north Mobile County and will deliver traffic more efficiently, particularly when other businesses move into the area,? said Commissioner Mike Dean. The new, 3.3 mile roadway will cost $1.6 million and will be paid out of 2004 Pay-As-You-Go funds. Other road projects in the area are underway this month to address the increasing traffic volume. The Mobile County Commission also approved the addition of turn lanes on W. Coy Smith Highway at the intersection to Calcedeaver Elementary School, Sam Lewis Road and Red Fox Road. The improvements address safety concerns and traffic congestion when drivers have to make turns off the two-lane highway. The intersection improvements will get underway this month and take two to three months to finish. The cost is $494,000. ?We need to have the infrastructure so we have orderly and efficient development,? said Commissioner Connie Hudson. ?These projects are timely improvements to accommodate the growth around TK.?
