Mobile County Celebrates National County Government Month

The Mobile County Commission has several events planned the month of April to celebrate National County Government Month, focusing on the many public services that the county commission provides to its citizens. This year?s theme is ?Healthy Counties.? ?National County Government Month is the perfect opportunity for our citizens to get to know what county government really does for its citizens,? said County Commission President Merceria Ludgood. With the signing of a resolution at the April 12 Commission Meeting, the commissioners will officially declare County Government Month in Mobile County. ?Our county has so much to offer to our residents, and we want to show our residents that their leaders are here for them,? said Ludgood. National County Government Month was created in 1991 by the National Association of Counties. There are activities at the national, state and local levels during this week with more than 1,000 counties participating annually. April 30 * County Government Open House ? Citizens can visit Mobile Government Plaza and explore the one place that houses county and city governments, and courts in one facility. Call 574-3208 or 574-5095 to schedule a group tour. Thursday, April 15 * Thursday Talk ? 6:30 p.m., Camille?s Sidewalk Cafe ? Commissioner Mike Dean will address members of the Mobile Civitan Club. Monday, April 19 * Monday Talk ? 10 a.m., Dauphin Island Elementary School ? Commissioner Mike Dean will read to Mrs. McGuire?s Second Grade class and help the group in surpassing their record for reading more than 1,900 books and more than 3,000,000 words. Thursday, April 22 * County Commission Conference ? 10 a.m., Mobile Government Plaza, Multi-Purpose Room Friday, April 23 * The Enforcers ? 9 a.m., Tanner Williams Elementary School and 1:30 p.m., Calcedeaver Elemernatry School ? The Mobile County Department of Environmental Enforcement will visit Tanner Williams Elementary School to discuss the importance of a clean and litter-free environment. * Friday Talk ? 9 a.m until 10:45 a.m., Maryvale Elementary School ? Commissioner Merceria Ludgood will address the students about the role of county government at the school?s first career fair. * United Way Day of Caring ? 1 p.m. ? 5 p.m., A group of county employees will utilize their own time to volunteer at a United Way agency. Monday, April 27 * County Commission Meeting ? 10 a.m., Mobile Government Plaza, Auditorium ? Special guests will be the 10 students recently inducted into the school?s newly charter National Honor Society. Wednesday, April 28 * BOGO (Bring One, Get One) Wednesday ? beginning at 8 a.m. until supplies last, Mobile Government Plaza, Information Booth ? Donate one (1) bag of non-perishable grocery items to the Mobile County Food Drive and receive a FREE reusable canvas bag (while supplies last). Items can be dropped off at the Information Booth in Mobile Government Plaza. All donations will be given to the Bay Area Food Bank to help local needy families. * State of the City and County Luncheon, 12 ? 1:30 p.m., Mobile Convention Center ? Commission President Merceria Ludgood will address the audience about the affairs of the county. Friday, April 30 * Chew & Chat ? 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m., Mobile Government Plaza ? Citizens are invited to bring a bag lunch and enjoy music from The Special Delivery Band in the atrium. ###
