Mobile County Celebrates National County Government Week

Each year, local governments across the nation celebrate National County Government Week as a way to raise public awareness and understanding of the roles and responsibilities of county government. The Mobile County Commission has several events planned the week of May 3-9 to celebrate National County Government Week, focusing on the many public services that the county commission provides to its citizens. This year?s theme is ?Greening Our Future.? ?National County Government Week is the perfect opportunity for our citizens to get to know what county government really does for its citizens,? said County Commission President Mike Dean. ?Unfortunately, many of our residents only think about the one aspect of county government that most often touches their life, but the county provides services and programs that contribute to the quality of like in our community, safety of all citizens and the economic growth of the county.? National County Government Week was created in 1991 by the National Association of Counties. There are activities at the national, state and local levels during this week with more than 1,000 counties participating annually. ?Our county has so much to offer to our residents, and we want to show our residents that their leaders are here for them,? said Dean. Monday-Friday, May 4-8 · County Government Open House ? Citizens can visit Mobile Government Plaza and explore the one place that houses county and city governments, and courts in one facility. Call 574-3208 or 574-5095 to schedule a group tour. Tuesday, May 5 · The Enforcers ? 10 a.m., George Hall Elementary School ? The Mobile County Department of Environmental Enforcement will visit George Hall Elementary School to discuss the importance of a clean and litter-free environment. Wednesday, May 6 · BOGO (Bring One, Get One) Wednesday ? beginning at 8 a.m. until supplies last, Mobile Government Plaza, Information Booth ? Donate one (1) bag of non-perishable grocery items to the Mobile County Food Drive and receive a FREE reusable canvas bag (while supplies last). Items can be dropped off at the Information Booth in Mobile Government Plaza. All donations will be given to the Bay Area Food Bank to help local needy families. · The Enforcers ? 9:30 a.m., Wilmer Elementary School ? The Mobile County Department of Environmental Enforcement will visit the school to discuss the importance of a clean and litter-free environment. Thursday, May 7 · County Commission Conference ? 10 a.m., Mobile Government Plaza, Commission Conference Room ? The Youth Council of the Drug Education Council will shadow the Commission. Friday, May 8 · Chew & Chat ? 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m., Mobile Government Plaza ? Citizens are invited to bring a bag lunch and enjoy it in the atrium.
