Mobile County Grant Funds Veterans Transitional Housing

Posted on: Jun 20th, 2013 | Announcements

Mobile County commissioners are expected to approve a $1.4 million federal grant today to complete the funding of a 39-unit transitional housing project for veterans located at 6501 Moffett Road. The commissioners will vote on the proposal at their 10 a.m. meeting at Government Plaza. The project, called Eagle?s Landing, is being developed by Volunteers of America Southeast, which is bringing another $1.7 million in federal grants to the project. Ten newly-constructed residential buildings are planned that will house 38 efficiency apartments and a single two-bedroom unit. ?We are proud to be contributing to the quality of life for our veterans, who have sacrificed so much for all of us,? said Mobile County Commissioner Connie Hudson. The county?s contribution comes from a HOME loan through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Volunteers of America received another $1.33 million from a HUD grant for economic development and a $395,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. ?This is a good example of the community working together to provide services that are needed,? said Mobile County Commission president Merceria Ludgood. In addition to the residential units, the housing complex also includes a community building with office space, laundry facilities, a computer lab and a meeting room. Eagle?s Landing will provide a range of voluntary support services intended to ease the movement of tenants into permanent housing within 24 months. ?Our veterans will have some help in getting back into the community and into the workplace,? said Mobile County Commissioner Jerry Carl. Volunteers of America is accepting referrals now for Eagles Landing. Interested persons should call (251)219-3900 or (251)421-1229. ###
