Mobile County To Build Events Pavilion

Posted on: Nov 15th, 2011 | News and Announcements

An agreement has been hammered out between Mobile city and county officials that will allow Mobile County to build an open-air pavilion in Medal of Honor Park to be named the Mobile County Bicentennial Pavilion. Slated to be opened in spring of next year, the 2,500 square foot events pavilion will include stage lighting and sound equipment. Located near the water tower in the park, it will be home to stage productions, concerts, movies and other community events. ?This will provide a whole new experience for our community that will serve not only our west Mobile residents, but will draw people from all parts because of the caliber of performance the pavilion can accommodate,? said County Commissioner Connie Hudson. The County of Mobile has agreed to design, engineer and construct the pavilion; the City of Mobile will operate and maintain the facility. The $300,000 project was initiated by Hudson during her tenure at the City of Mobile as the District 6 city councilperson. She had collected partial funding for the project through her District 6 discretionary funds and a contribution at the same time from the Mobile County Commission. She also obtained grants of $10,000 from the J.L. Bedsole Foundation and $5,000 from Blacksher-White-Spunner. As a county commissioner now, Hudson will draw the balance of funding for the project from the Mobile County Commission. Opening of the pavilion will coincide with the year-long celebration of Mobile County?s 200th birthday in 2012. ?The pavilion will be a legacy gift of our Bicentennial celebration that will forever after add to the cultural wealth of our community,? said County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood. ?This is the kind of gift that keeps on giving,? said Mobile County Commissioner Mike Dean. ?It will be a source of entertainment and education for generations.?
