Mobile County to Participate in 2024 Operation Green Light for Veterans

In advance of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, Mobile County will illuminate Mobile Government Plaza green as part of Operation Green Light for Veterans, a nationwide effort uniting counties to support military veterans. The initiative, led by the National Association of Counties (NACo), raises awareness about the unique challenges faced by many veterans and the resources available at the county, state, and federal levels to assist veterans and their families.
“The importance of veterans’ service to our nation cannot be understated,” said District 1 Commissioner Merceria Ludgood. “By shining green lights at homes and businesses throughout Mobile County during the week of the Veterans Day holiday, we can show veterans that they’re appreciated and supported.”
Now in its third year, Operation Green Light is spearheaded by NACo and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers, building upon successful efforts by the New York State Association of Counties and the NYS County Veteran Service Officers’ Association in 2021. In 2023, over 300 counties participated in Operation Green Light.
“Veterans often face challenges as they return to civilian life and may not be aware of the available programs and services. Operation Green Light allows us to not only show local veterans our appreciation, but also to share information available to them,” said District 2 Commissioner Connie Hudson.
In addition to lighting county buildings and other meaningful landmarks, residents, businesses, and other organizations are encouraged to participate by simply changing one light bulb inside or outside their home to a green bulb. By shining a green light, we let our veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported, and we open up conversations about the needs of veterans and the services that support veteran communities.
Locally, Mobile Government Plaza will be lit green from Nov. 5 to Nov.11, the USS Alabama Battleship will also be lit during the weeklong observance; and the RSA Building will be lit green on Nov. 6.
“We regularly thank veterans and acknowledge their service, and many residents who are veterans are thriving here in Mobile County, but it’s also important to acknowledge needs and assist with connecting veterans to available resources,” said Commission President Randall Dueitt, who represents District 3.
