Old Pascagoula Bridge Opens After 11-Month Fix

Posted on: Oct 14th, 2015 | News and Announcements

Street crews will finish construction at noon today of the Old Pascagoula Road bridge, between Ramsey and March Roads, ending an 11-month long effort to replace the previous structure that spanned Jackson Creek. The opening will include a ribbon cutting at the bridge followed by opening of the barricades. ?This is the kind of upgrade that we need for our infrastructure to provide for the basic safety of our citizens on the roads,? said Mobile County Commission President Jerry Carl. ?This project is part of ongoing upgrades to ensure the integrity of our roadways.? Some 4,600 vehicles a day will be flowing back onto this roadway with the completion of the $1.4 million construction project. The new bridge is 210 feet long and will be bigger and wider than the 1940 bridge it replaced. ?The Mobile County Commission has supported a program to replace bridges on a regular basis as they show signs of deterioration or become outmoded as traffic changes,? said Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood. The project was a partnership with the state of Alabama Department of Transportation. Mobile funded 20 percent of the project; the state picked up the rest. ?I know that motorists have had to be patient with the detours, but they will now have a safer and easier crossing with the larger bridge,? said Mobile County Commissioner Connie Hudson.
