Posted on: Nov 1st, 2016 | News and Announcements

Residents of Mobile County have enjoyed a 39-year success story with the county?s Pay-As-You-Go Transportation Improvement Program. On Tues., Nov. 8, voters will once again be asked to decide the future of this very important program. Distinct from the statewide constitutional amendments, the 2016 Pay-As-You-Go Program is listed as a ?Special County Election? and is the last measure on the ballot. The Pay-As-You-Go program started in 1977 and has been approved by Mobile County voters all 15 times it has come up for a vote. Mobile County is the only county in the state with such funding mechanism for road improvements. Programs include two years? worth of road and bridge improvements. The program is a model for road and bridge improvements because it is accomplished with no borrowed money and no new taxes. Up for voters? approval are projects including extensive work inside the City of Mobile, improvements in the unincorporated part of the county, and at least one project in each of the Mobile County?s municipalities. Projects may be viewed by clicking on http://www.mobilecountypublicworks.net/pdfs/2016-PayAsYouGo.pdf This program will complete much needed work within the City of Mobile including the ? Improvement of Zeigler Blvd. to allow traffic to increase to 20,000 daily moving from the rural and suburban parts of Mobile into the downtown area. ? Widening of McGregor Ave. and constructing a new roundabout at Dauphin St. ? Resurfacing Airport Blvd. from McGregor Ave. eastward to Western American Circle ? Resurfacing of Hillcrest Rd. from Cottage Hill Rd. northward to Grelot Rd. In the county area, projects include ? Extending the widening of Zeigler Blvd. from Schillinger Rd. to Tanner Williams Rd. ? Widening McDonald Rd. from I-10 to Old Pascagoula Rd. ? Building a new road to connect McDonald Rd. at Old Pascagoula Rd. to McFarland Rd. at Three Notch-Kroner Rd. This new road will allow traffic traveling down Snow Rd. and McFarland Rd. to have direct access to I-10. ? Resurfacing Three Notch-Kroner Rd. from Dawes Rd. to McDonald Rd. ? Resurfacing Padgett Switch Rd. from Half Mile Rd. to Hwy. 90. In total 67.9 miles will be added or improved. These improvements will accommodate the on-going increases in residential and industrial traffic that Mobile has experienced the past decades and keep Mobile County?s communities connected through a network of adequate roadways.
