Prize-winning author Watt Key will be speaking to local audiences Thursday, September 6 about his young adults? book titled ?Alabama Moon,? the Book of the Year selection by the Mobile County Bicentennial Commission. ?It?s a great opportunity for our youth to visit with a Bay-area author and to read a great coming-of-age novel set in Alabama,? said Mary Atchison, Education and History Chairman of the Bicentennial Commission. The public is invited to hear the author speak at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6 at Bernheim Hall at the Ben May Public Library downtown. A reception and book-signing will follow. Key, who grew up in Point Clear in the 1970?s, will be speaking to smaller audiences of middle school students during the day. He will speak with a class of seventh graders in Satsuma in the morning and another class at Semmes Middle School in the afternoon. Alabama Moon is set in Alabama and features a young boy who has lived in isolation with his father for most of his life and then has to fend for himself after his father dies. His odyssey ends in Mobile County. The book has been awarded the 2007 E.B. White Read-Aloud Award, the 2006 Parent's Choice Gold Award and has been translated into seven languages. A movie has been adapted from the book.
