More than 150 people will celebrate the grand opening of the new Mobile County Government Plaza Annex at 10 a.m. Monday, May 3 at the flag poles at the front of the building at 151 Government St., next to Mobile Government Plaza. A reception and public tours of the new facility will follow. In the case of rain, the ceremony will be moved to Courtroom One on the third floor. The $17 million building downtown will house Mobile County Probate Court and the main offices of the Board of Registrars and the Barber Commission. It will also house satellite offices of the License and Revenue Commissions. Goodwyn Mills and Cawood Inc. designed the new building with historic detailing and other features to blend with the rest of the downtown, such as brick exteriors with the color and texture that reflect Mobile?s historic St. Joe?s brick. The new annex literally surrounds the historic Levert house circa 1830, which houses the Mobile Bar Association. The Levert house can be seen from the foyer of the new annex. At the same time, the annex meets all of today?s standards. It can withstand 140 MPH winds, while the window glazing and frames are impact-resistant. It incorporates modern technology, such as big screen projection capability in the courtrooms, which allow easy viewing of legal exhibits. Interior design features granite flooring on the ground level and dark mahogany wood throughout. The four-story building was completed on time and under budget at the end of March and county employees moved their offices into the new annex during April. All three floors are occupied; the fourth floor is available for expansion. The builder is Ben M. Radcliff Contractors Inc.
