Get ready for the Red, White & Drool Adoption Event at the Mobile County Animal Shelter set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the shelter, 7665 Howells Ferry Road, one block east of Schillinger Road. Deep discounts on adoptions will be offered along with a micro-chip and a rabies clinic. Attending the four-hour adoption event will be a junior fundraiser by the name of Charlotte, 8.5 years old, who will be on site with baked goods to raise funds for the shelter. Cost of adoptions will be $45 for dogs and $30 for cats. The cost includes spaying and neutering, a rabies shot and a 5-in-1 vaccination. Normally, adoptions are $80 for dogs and $70 for cats, but the shelter is discounting adoptions through the summer, with the help of sponsors who are picking up some of the costs. The shelter is competing in a $100,000 adoption challenge sponsored by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Rachel Ray. The goal is to adopt out 1,000 pets before Aug. 31. The shelter can win $5,000 to $100,000 if it meets its goal. The money would be used to purchase an adoption van and for shelter improvements.
