River Delta Park Gets $1.5 Million Upgrade

Posted on: Dec 9th, 2011 | News and Announcements

The Mobile County Commission has completed $1.5 million in improvements to the Mobile River Delta Marina, Campground and Welcome Center, a regional park that offers access to the Mobile-Tensaw Delta waters. The upgrades were financed through a federal Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP) grant. The funding provided for several environmental improvements that include the following: ? Rebuilding the boat access areas. ? Replacement of the head wall to stabilize the shore line. ? Construction of an open-air pavilion. ? Upgrading wetland areas. ? Providing educational elements through signage about different kinds of wildlife and vegetation. ? Water quality monitoring. ? A pond aerator. ? Expanding the sewer system where the larger boats dock. ? Constructing a walkway. ? Planting new trees. ? Building a kayak launch. ?We have a stunning natural resource in our River Delta park because of it is part of the Mobile-Tensaw ecosystem with its unique plants and wildlife,? said Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood. ?This grant provided the means to expand access and assure the park?s sustainability.? There is high demand for the more than 50 boat slips at the marina. In the last year, there were more than 7,000 boat launches from the site. The marina and park also attracts anglers for recreational fishing as well as several fishing tournaments each year. Campers use the park year-round, either renting the cabins on site or parking recreational vehicles there. In the last year there were more than 400 cabin rentals. ?Those who have discovered our delta park keep coming back,? said County Commission President Connie Hudson. ?It?s one of the few public access sites to our pristine delta waters.? ?We have been blessed with exceptional natural resources in Mobile County and we are aggressively seeking environmental grants to continue to preserve and upgrade these areas,? said Mobile County Commissioner Mike Dean. The Marina is located at the end of Dead Lake Road (take exit 22 off 1-65 and follow signs). Reservations and information can be obtained by phone at 251-574-2266.
